Pastor's Message
I was born in Richmond Virginia on February 7, 1955 to Rufus and Tamar Morris. I was the third and last child. I have a brother John in Ashland Virginia; He is 16 years older than me. I had another brother, Mike, who was killed in a car accident in December 1989. He was 12 years older than me. My father died a month later from complications during a heart procedure at Duke Hospital. My mother died two years later from cancer.
The first four years of my life we moved a lot, Dad worked construction in Maryland and Virginia. When I was four Dad took a job as an electrician at Andrews Air Force base outside Washington DC. We lived in Upper Marlboro, Maryland until I was 12. Dad had several heart attacks and had to retire. Upon his retirement we moved to Sanford N.C. or more precisely Carbonton, a small community several miles outside Sanford. The Carbonton area was my parents home and we had a lot of family there. There are still several Aunts and Uncles there. My parents and brother are buried in the Carbonton Methodist Church cemetery along with grandparents and most of my family. I lived in Carbonton until I left to join the Navy in 1975. I attended Sanford Central High School and graduated in 1974.
I served five years in the Navy as a Machinist Mate working on boilers and steam engines. Amy and I met in Charleston S.C. in 1976 and where married on September 19, 1976. We lived for three years in Spain and our oldest daughter Susan was born there in 1979.
Amy is from the St. Louis area and she is the middle of five children born to Robert and Evelyn Mandrell. Her parents are still alive and live in Mt. Vernon Ill.
We moved to the Raleigh area in 1980 after I was honorably discharged from the Navy. I worked for N.C. State University as a boiler operator for a year and then took a job with Westinghouse as a boiler operator. Our second daughter, Lauren was born in 1981. I worked for Westinghouse for the next 13 years and held several positions during that time. I was laid off in 1994. Daughter number three, Gwen, was born in 1985. I worked for Motorola as a maintenance supervisor for 4 years and was laid off in 1998. I worked as a travel agent for several months before deciding to accept the call of God to the ministry.
Susan is currently living in Germany, her husband, Army Captain Will Perkins, is stationed in Iraq. Susan is a graduate of UNC Pembroke. Lauren works for Resources For Seniors in Raleigh, NC and Gwen will graduate from ECU in December 2007.
Amy works for North Carolina Partnership for Children as a monitor.
